Phi Phi Island

Koh Samui Informationen

Allgemein

Located in the gulf of Thailand, 80 Km off the coast of Surat Thani and about 560 Km south of Bangkok, is the magical island of Koh Samui.

The island itself has an area of 280 sq. Km, making it the second largest island in Thailand after Phuket. Not long ago the primary industry was coconut plantations. Even today, plantations exist and can be seen when driving around the island. However, the income earned from coconuts is nowhere near the hard currency value generated through tourism.

Renown in the past as a carefree, exotic destination accessible only by boat to the more intrepid traveler, Samui evoked a sense of escapism back in time. Because of its isolation, only those who dared to venture discovered the laid back feeling of this idyllic setting.

Samui is aptly referred to as a bohemian paradise of white sandy beaches and swaying palm trees. If you're looking for heaven on earth, your expectations will be met on this tropical gem.

Accessibility, or lack of it, kept Samui basking in the sunshine from the rest of the world and especially mainstream tourism. Back then, you could get a room on the beach for as little as 200 Baht.

How things have changed !!

Those of us with fond memories of the past may not necessarily appreciate the pace of development unfolding before our eyes. Samui is fast being wrenched into Western civilization and "sustainable development" is now the catch phrase among those who have seen the island evolve.

Over the past five years, Samui has witnessed substantial modernization from various infrastructural improvements, including road and sewage projects, and of course hotels.

Thankfully, the pockets of development that have risen are concentrated in specific areas. Today much of the island, especially the southern coastline, retains its original beauty. You too can discover the magic of Samui while exploring its delights on a motor bike or in an open-top jeep.
